Q

what were the four hypothesis of Banduras research

A

1) children shown aggressive models will show significantly more imitative aggressive acts than those in non aggressive model/ no model
2) children shown non aggressive models will show significantly less aggressive behaviour than those in non aggressive/ no model
3) boys will show significantly more imitative aggressions that girls
4)children will imitate same sex models behaviour more than opposite gender behaviour

Q

What is the sampling method and sample of Banduras study?

A

opportunity sampling due to using the children readily available in nursery (question to consent)
72 (36 boys and girls) children average age 4.3 years, in stanford university nursery,

Q

Explain the matching procedure of behaviour

A

As a control children we measured for levels of aggressive behaviour, by nursery teacher and one female experimenter observing. rating each child on a 5 point scale, displayed physical aggression, verbal aggression, aggression to inanimate objects and aggression inhibition.
based on these rating children were paired as triplets, in each one would be in the aggressive model, non aggressive and no model, three in triplets would all either have high aggression, medium or low
high inter-rater reliability because both teachers agreed on ratings 89%

Q

Explain the standardised procedure of aggressive model condition 1 in Banduras study

A

Aggressive model had set behaviour to portray
Physically- lay doll on side, punch in nose, punch with mallet, throw in air
Verbally- Pow, Kick him, Hit him down, He sure is a tough fella
set routine repeated three times for each child

Q

Explain the standardised procedure of stage 2 in banduras study

A

the Arousal experience occurred for all 72 children
they are taken to an attractive room filled with desirable toys. after 2 minutes of playing with them, experimenter took toys away saying toys are reserved for other children
this indulges a feeling of anger and distress in all children equally

Q

Explain the procedure of the observation room

A

toys were set in a fixed order with both aggressive and non aggressive toys, child was allowed to play for 20 minutes and observed through a one way mirror by male model and one other observer in 5 second intervals, observers were not aware which condition the children were in, female experimenter stayed in the room with the child doing paperwork

Q

What are the qualitative results of Banduras study

A

-Children in the aggressive model showed more imitation of physical and verbal aggressive behaviour than children in non aggressive or control conditions
-overall boys produced more imitative physical aggression than girls
-male model behaviour was more influential over both boys and girls than the female model
-children felt that that the female aggressive model was not appropriate “thats not a way for a lady to behave” but the male model “ that man is a strong fighter”

Q

What are the conclusions of banduras study

A

aggression is learnt through observing role models
children imitate models even when model is not present
behaviour modelled by a male has greater influence on children due to gender socialisation

Q

Evaluate the fact bandura used a lab experiment

A

high levels of control over extraneous variables so cause and effect can be established
standardised procedure allows rebliciablity of study so can test for reliability
low ecological validity due to artificial env ect so ungeneralisable
high risk of demand characteristics so lacks internal validity

14
Q

What type of study was bandura: snapshot or longitudinal, evaluate it

A

it is snapshot since:
only takes one measure of behaviour, doesn’t track the development of behaviour, compares different groups
due to this it has high controls since conducted over a short period
but it doesn’t show how this effects behaviour after the study since not measured

15
Q

Evaluate the ethics of Banduras study

A

Protection of participants- children may have been stressed by witnessing aggression
right to withdraw- children may not have realised they could leave the experiment
informed consent- lack of
deception- children not aware of the purpose of the study

16
Q

Evaluate the types of data in banduras study

A

quant- allows for easy comparison between groups to see the impact on behaviour
allows for easy replication of measurement so increases reliability
cannot show insight into why behaviour occurred clearly reduced validity
hard to create effective practical application from numbers so less useful
quali- can gain insight in increases overall validity

17
Q

Evaluate the sample of Banduras study

A

there are equal numbers of boys and girls 36/36 so sample representative of genders
only generalisable to american children
all children from same area stanford so sample not representative of other areas
Ethnocentrism middle class

18
Q

Explain the learning theory operant conditioning

A

this is how we learn through consequence and rewards as found through Skinners work with the rat pulling the lever for food

19
Q

explain the categories of operant conditioning

A

positive reinforcement- adding something to the situation to increase the likelihood of the behvaiour
negative reinforcement- removing something from the situation to increase the likelihood of the situation

20
Q

What is chaneys aim

A

to test if a funhaler could provide positive reinforcement to improve adherence to medical regime of asthmatic child

21
Q

What was chaneys research method

A

field experiment

22
Q

What was chaneys design

A

repeated measures

23
Q

what was the IV/DV of chaney

A

IV- standard spaced or funhaler
DV- adherence to prescribed medical regime (measure if they use it enough times a day)

24
Q

What was chaneys sampling method and sample

A

random sampling from 7 clinics in Perth
32 children 22 male and 10 female in Australie mean age 3.2 years

25
Q

Explain chaneys procedure

A

interview parents with questionnaire (closed q) asking abt current spacer and childs characteristics
funhaler given over two weeks
parents randomly phones to ask how the child was using the previous day
parents visited given questionnaire about usage and attitude (same parent questioned)

26
Q

Explain the results from chaneys study

A

no significant dif in aerosol output
funhaler associated with imporved parental and child compliance
38% more parents medicated child previous day when using funhaler
60% more children took recomended regime using funhaler
22/30 parents reported to ‘always’ successfully medicated child

27
Q

What were the conclusions of chaneys study

A

operant conditioning through the use of funhaler us useful for managing treatment of young asthmatics due to the reward system built in
use of self reinforcement strategies improve overall health of children

28
Q

Evaluate the sample used in Chaneys study

A

ethnocentric results due to children only from area of perth in australia so results not generalised
generalised to children of that age group 3.2 years

29
Q

Evaluate the validity of Chaneys study

A

field so high ecological validity as taken from within child’s home so no risk of demand characteristics
but low levels of controls so reduced reliability and validity

30
Q

What are the stengths of the developmental approach

A

supports nurture approach due acknowledgment in effect of environmental change influencing behvaiour
useful since practical applications for example helps health care regimes and understanding children

31
Q

What are the weaknesses of developmental area

A

reductionism as it doesn’t explore adults and only sees that environment is the factor not looking at biology, it is situational so ignored blame for individual themself

32
Q

What is the key assumption of Developmental approach

A

There are clear changed in behaviour as people progress through different stages in life from conception to death. these changed in behaviour are influenced by biological staged in development or by changed in our experience of the environment
