Development - Why are some places richer than others? Flashcards
What 4 factors determine why some places are ricer than others?
- Physical Environment
- Health
- Trade
- History
What 3 factors in the PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT affect whether a place is richer than others?
- Hot dry climates mean food cannot be grown so it has to be bought from other countries.
- Areas without fertile land, natural resources, water and energy suffer.
- Natural hazards make little progress with development, e.g. Haiti
What 3 factors regarding HEALTH affect whether a place is richer than others?
- Diseases can make people too weak to work or go to school.
- Lack of fresh water leads to illness.
- Low Income Country’s (LIC’s) haven’t got enough money to invest in good quality health care.
What 2 factors regarding TRADE affect whether a place is richer than others?
Primary products sold by LICs are sold for cheap prices. HICs make more expensive products so earn more.
Poor infrastructure (roads/internet/power) or conflict means some people cannot sell their goods at all.
What 2 factors regarding HISTORY affect whether a place is richer than others?
Many countries in Asia, South America and Africa have spent a lot of time and money on conflicts since they became independent from HICs.
Many LICs haven’t had time to develop fully as they were colonised and exploited by HICs.
