what is the HDI?
the human development index measures development using things like:
adult literacy
infant mortality
death rate
calorie intake
life expectancy
GDP(gross national product, total value of goods a country produces each year\by its population)
birth rate
patients per doctor
what factors contribute the human development?
economic
social
technological
cultural
food
water
what is the north south divide?
in britain, the south is more developed and has more opportunities
what is the gini coefficient?
it measures the extent of income inequality
(the lower the value the more equal the income is)
what does the uk do to reduce uneven development?
-free healthcare
-free education up to 16
-payed maternity leave
-minimum wage
-free school meals

what strategies are used to reduce uneven development and what are their pros and cons?
-aid ( helps look after the population, but people might misuse it)
-fair trade (more pay, but not everyone might be able to afford)
-remittance (migrants send money back to their families in their home country) ( helps support families, but money might be misused)
debt relief (the country doesn’t owe any money, the full debt might not be relieved)
trade + investment ( improves the economy , sometimes trade relationships don’t work)
what is the difference with top-down and bottom-up?
-top down is when the important people (less people) make decisions that affect the less important people
-bottom up is when the less important people (general public) make decisions which affect everyone
how do you write an eight marker?
write two paragraphs, each one using two marks to evaluate (pros and cons) and two marks to explain
