Johann Stamitz - Symphony in D (Op. 3, No. 2)
EARLY CLASSICAL PERIOD
A
- One of the first examples of the fourth movement being added to the symphony
(I) Presto (II) Andantino (III) Menuetto (IV) Prestissimo - Has a prototype of Sonata form, however the development section doesn’t explore the themes in variety of ways, it presents them exactly in different keys
- Recapitulation reverses the order of the themes “Subject” 2, then “Subject” 1.
- Movement II is a loose rounded binary form.
- Minuet is closer to more traditional Minuets (Rounded binary, but not a substantial different B theme)
- Trio very similar to the Minuet, later composers would develop this into more contrasting material.

Haydn Symphony No. 2 (1760)
EARLY CLASSICAL PERIOD
A
- 3 movement piece; no minuet used.
- Final movement is in Rondo form (ABA’CA”DABA’)
- The recapitulation in the first movement is not of the opening material but, in this case, is more like that transition idea. Both exposition and recapitulation end with a lengthy coda/codetta.
