Johann Stamitz - Symphony in D (Op. 3, No. 2)

EARLY CLASSICAL PERIOD

A
  • One of the first examples of the fourth movement being added to the symphony
    (I) Presto (II) Andantino (III) Menuetto (IV) Prestissimo
  • Has a prototype of Sonata form, however the development section doesn’t explore the themes in variety of ways, it presents them exactly in different keys
  • Recapitulation reverses the order of the themes “Subject” 2, then “Subject” 1.
  • Movement II is a loose rounded binary form.
  • Minuet is closer to more traditional Minuets (Rounded binary, but not a substantial different B theme)
  • Trio very similar to the Minuet, later composers would develop this into more contrasting material.

EARLY CLASSICAL PERIOD

A
  • 3 movement piece; no minuet used.
  • Final movement is in Rondo form (ABA’CA”DABA’)
