Development of the spinal cord Flashcards
Which layer is the nervous system developed from?
The ectoderm
What is the neural plate?
The structure resulting from the thickened ectoderm
What is the neural groove?
the longituindal depression in the middle of the neural plate, which lies between the two lateral margins called the neural folds
Describe the process of nervous system development
Ectoderm -> neural plate -> neural folds -> neural groove -> neural tube -> neural crests -> brain/spinal cord/ganglia
Which part of the neural tube forms the brain?
The rostral part
Which part of the neural tube forms the spinal cord?
The caudal part
What does the central cavity of the neural tube form?
The spinal canal and the ventricles of the brain
What do the neural crests form?
The sensory and autonomic ganglia
What do the dorsal and ventral groupings become?
Dorsal = the alar plate (sensory neurones)
Ventral - the basal plate (motor neurones)
Describe the matter in the spinal cord
Outer layer - white matter
Inner layer - grey matter
By which week has the brain developed its three vescicles, and what are they?
The fifth week
Prosencephalon - Forebrain
Mesencephalon - Midbrain
Rhombencephalon - Hindbrain
Which week do the three vesicles become five vesicles?
Telencephalon = 2 Cerebral hemispheres Diencephalon = Thalamus
Mesencephalon = Midbrain
Metencephalon = pons and cerebellum Myelencephalon = medulla oblongata
