Development of the endocrine glands Flashcards
Which week does the pituitary gland begin to develop?
Week 6
What does the pituitary gland develop from?
2 sources:
- ectoderm of oral cavity
[] invaginates to form Rathke’s pouch - neuroectoderm
[] invaginates to create neurophyseal diverticulum (becomes infundibulum)
What happens from week 11 in the development of the pituitary?
Tissues associated
- anterior lobe
- posterior lobe
- hypophysial fossa
What forms the anterior lobe of the pituitary?
Pharyngeal ectoderm
What forms the posterior lobe of the pituitary?
Neuroectoderm
What forms the hypophysial fossa?
Sphenoidbonebeginstosurroundinferiorly
When is the pituitary gland fully formed?
In week 16
- optic chiasm also formed above
In adult life describe the pituitary gland?
Anterior lobe (adenohypophysis) - glandular with rich blood supply
Posterior lobe (neurohypophysis) - Nervous part - contains axons originating in hypothalamus which secrete oxygen and vasopressin into blood
What is the adrenal medulla formed from?
Neural crest cells (neuroectoderm)
What is the adrenal cortex formed from?
Mesoderm
- neural crest cells migrate to form sympathetic ganglion and some continue into mesoderm, pushing in amongst cells that are developing into adrenal cortex
What is the thyroid formed from?
Thyroid diverticulum develops from endoderm at foramen caecum (V shaped angle at back of tongue)
Descends along midline leaving thyroglossal duct behind
What do the parafollicular ‘C’ cells form from?
Develop from neural crest cells descending from 4th pharyngeal pouch
Catch up and embed themselves in thyroid, forming C cells (produce calcitonin)
