Development of the Embryo Flashcards
Approximately how long after fertilisation does the implanted blastocyst start to differentiate into different types of cells?
~ 1 week
Describe what happens to the embryoblast.
Splits into two, with the yolk sac on one side and the amniotic cavity on the other.
What sits between the yolk sac and the amniotic cavity?
Embryonic disc, which develop into the foetal pole, and eventually into the foetus.
What surrounds the embryoblast complex?
Chorion
What are the two layers of the chorion?
- Cytotrophoblast (inner layer)
2. Syncytiotrophoblast (outer layer embedded in endometrium)
What does the connecting stalk eventually become?
Umbilical cord.
When does the embryonic disc develop into the foetal pole?
~ 5 weeks gestation
What are the three layers of the foetal pole?
- Ectoderm (outer layer)
- Mesoderm (middle layer)
- Endoderm (inner layer)
List 6 tissues the endoderm forms.
- GI tract
- Lungs
- Liver
- Pancreas
- Thyroid
- Reproductive system
List 6 tissues the mesoderm forms.
- Heart
- Muscle
- Bone
- Connective tissue
- Blood
- Kidneys
List 5 tissues the ectoderm forms.
- Skin
- Hair
- Nails
- Teeth
- Central nervous system
When does the foetal heart form and start to beat?
~ 6 weeks gestation
When have all the major organs began to develop?~
~ 8 weeks gestation
