- there was co-operation between the west and was during the war
- however, once the Nazis, the common enemy, was got rid of, the alliance collapsed

- the US and USSR had different universal ideologies
- this meant that both couldn’t tolerate the other
- the US was built of the principles of capitalism, individualism and liberal democracy
- in contrast, the USSR was built on communist principles
- the focus was on the needs of society rather than individuals
