Describe the Phasic Bite stage
The Phasic Bite stage occurs around 0-3 months. It causes the mouth to open and close then the gums are touched. There is also an upward and downward movement of the jaw when the finger is placed on the gum ridge. This stage prepares the mouth for chewing
When does the Phasic Bite occur
0-3 months
Describe the Mouthing Stage
Mouthing is a useful pre-chewing experience for babies - it can be seen when they put their fingers or toys into their mouths
Describe the Vertical Chewing stage
The Vertical Chewing stage occurs around 6 months. It us characterised with vertical up+down jaw movements. Tongue initially moves up and down and can deal with ‘mush’ like textures of food. The tongue begins to move independently from the jaw around 7-9 months and can more sideways. The upper lip also becomes more skilled in removing food from the spoon
When does the tongue become independent from the jaw
around 7-9 months
Describe the Rotary Chewing Stage
The Rotary Chewing stage occurs around 18-30 months. Uses rotary jaw movements. It occurs around 18-30 months. It is considered ‘true’ chewing
When is chewing established
Around 18-30 months
