Describe the Suck, Swallow, Breathe Co-Ordination

Suck, Swallow, Breathe is coordinated at 34-36 weeks gestation (in the womb). There are elements of compression and suction. There are around 10-30 sucks per burst - the infant stops breathing between each swallow (as do adults). If the child has breathing problems and this cycle is disrupted they will then have problems with sucking and therefore taking in as much milk
