stage 1
indiscriminate attachment - birth-2months. produce same response to all objects, whether animate or inanimate, show preference to social stimuli (smiling face)
stage 2
beginning of attachment - 4months - prefer human company, can tell between familiar and unfamiliar people. comforted by anyone
stage 3
discriminate attachment - 7months, shows separation anxiety, and joy at reunion, have formed a primary attachment figure. Also display stranger anxiety
stage 4
multiple attachment - depends on consistent relationship (parent, grandparents, siblings, friends)

schaffer and emerson (1964) study
longitudinal study of 60 newborns. WC mums in Glasgow, mum and babies were visited every month until 1 year thrn again at 18 months at each visit mothers reported if infant had response to separation in 7 days. also asked to look at the intensity of any protest, rate on scale of 4
limitation
unreliable data - it was based on mothers reports, some mothers might have been less sensitive to infants protests (crying) so less likely report them. change validity
findings
separation anxiety was found in most infants between 6-8 months
stranger anxiety started about one month later
