caregiver infant interactions Flashcards
what’s reciprocity
responding to action with similar action, action of one person brings out a response from another.
who talked about reciprocity
jaffe et al 1973
brazelton 1979
what’s intersectional synchrony
when 2 people interact they mirror what they other is doing with facial or body movements, imitating behaviour
meltzoff and moore 1977
conducted a systematic study, found infants young as 2 and 3 weeks imitated special facial and hand gestures, (sticking tongue out, opening mouth and pouting)
findings of meltzoff and moores study
intersectionsl synchrony is innate and reduces the strength of any claim that imitative behaviour is learned
how old were they when shown imitation
babies young as 2-3weeks , later studies showed as old as 3 DAYS
limitation
failure to replicate - koepke tried to replicate, however meltzoff said it’s because it was less carefully controlled. has not been replicated since, less valid.
limitation
infants mouths are constantly moving and the expressions tested occur frequently (sticking tongue, yawning etc) makes it difficult to measure behaviour
strength
intentionality support
