development of an embryo Flashcards
What is gastrulation?
An early developmental process that occurs in the third week, in which an embryo transforms from a one-dimensional layer of epithelial cells (blastula) and reorganizes into a multilayered and multidimensional structure called the gastrula. The ectoderm is identifiable.
What is neural induction, and when does it occur?
It occurs to form the neural plate and eventually, will form the entire nervous system. It occurs during gastrulation.
What is neurulation?
It’s when there is an elongation of the embryo and folding of the neural plate to form the neural tube. It occurs during the fourth week. Also, a ‘head’ and ‘tail’ end are determined by differential gene expression.
