Q

What can be noted regarding protection for the 3 different biomes?

A

Although Brazil has the greatest species diversity (56,000), a smaller proportion of its land (18%) is protected than in Tanzania, (nearly 40% is designated National Parkland).
Bangladesh - high population density, smallest land protection, lowest species diversity. highest % of animals under threat.

Q

Why is species diversity important? 4

A
  1. Plants photosynthesise - produces the oxygen that we breathe.
  2. Trees act as a carbon sink - absorbing fossil fuel emissions.
  3. Some species keep the human race alive by purifying water, fixing nitrogen and recycling nutrients/waste.
  4. Insects pollinate crops.

Q

Which biome is under the greatest threat (due to economic pressure and population growth)?

A

Tropical monsoon biome - 7%.
Unknown whether future sustainable development will allow these ecosystems to coexist with economic development and the predicted outcomes of climate change.
