Development issues in the three biomes Flashcards
STATS.
Total land area protected (%).
Higher plants (number of species)/threatened (%).
Mammals (number of species)/threatened (%).
// Brazil (TRF), Tanzania (savanna grassland), Bangladesh (tropical monsoon forest)//.
Land - 18, 40, 0.5%. Plants - 56,000 , 10,000, 5,000 Plants threatened - 0.7, 2.4, 0.2%. Mammals - 580, 375, 130. Mammals threatened - 13, 9, 17.
What can be noted regarding protection for the 3 different biomes?
Although Brazil has the greatest species diversity (56,000), a smaller proportion of its land (18%) is protected than in Tanzania, (nearly 40% is designated National Parkland).
Bangladesh - high population density, smallest land protection, lowest species diversity. highest % of animals under threat.
Why is species diversity important? 4
- Plants photosynthesise - produces the oxygen that we breathe.
- Trees act as a carbon sink - absorbing fossil fuel emissions.
- Some species keep the human race alive by purifying water, fixing nitrogen and recycling nutrients/waste.
- Insects pollinate crops.
Which biome is under the greatest threat (due to economic pressure and population growth)?
Tropical monsoon biome - 7%.
Unknown whether future sustainable development will allow these ecosystems to coexist with economic development and the predicted outcomes of climate change.
