Cultural Indicators
Look at the effect of traditions, religions and way of life. They measure things such as different religious practises.
Problems of deciding a country’s development based on one indicator
-Money is spread unevenly
-Indicators are averages, therefore they may hide inequalities within a country.
-Many indicators from certain countries are inaccurate.
-Some countries don’t want information about true conditions to be known.
What is the HDI?
The HDI is an ‘Index’ – a combination of development data:
- Life expectancy at birth
- Education
- GNI per capita (average income)
How does the HDI represent development more accurately?
It shows how money is used to benefit the population. Countries with high GNI might not necessarily have high HDI scores, due to inequalities within these countries.
