DEVELOPMENT DYNAMICS Flashcards
factors affecting development
climate
topography shape of land
education
health
colonialism
neo colonialism
economic and political factors
how does climate affect development
really hot?really cold?really dry?
not much will grow!
fewer crops to sell= less to spend on goods and services= reduced quality of life= reduced income for businesses and the economy
how does topography affect development?
steep land= less food
steep land= difficult to make infrastructure
can limit trade and make basic services hard
how does education affect development
less educated people will be unable to get good jobs and the economy will be worse
skilled workers will move to more developed places and cause a brain drain
HOWEVER
more skilled workers = more services which can bring money in thru trade and investment
educated people earn more and pay more taxes, so more money for development
how does health affect development
lack of clean water and poor healthcare = diseases like malaria and cholera
ill = not working
not working = less money to economy
lower economic contribution = less for development
how does colonialism affect development?
colonised countries are ones that are ruled by other countries
this means that when they go independant they have a lower level of development than if they had never bloody been colonised
much of africa was colonised by european countries in 19th century
they removed raw materials
africa became dependant on them
leading to famine and malnutrition
how does neo colonialism affect development
controlling them indirectly after they gained their independence
eg some trans national co orperations exploit cheap labour and raw material
economic and political factors affecting development
authoritarian governments can put development policies in place and no one can stop em
like china growing but cubas economic crash
how corrupt governments hinder development
take money for development nd improving facilities
how do international relations help development
countries with international relations are more likely to get good trade offers.
authoritarian governments vs democratic government
authoritarian tell people whatta do
democratic are chosen by the people
educational
consequences of global inequalities of money
poorer countries cant afford to invest in education as much
poorer people cant afford school fees
(as a result kids may have to work instead of education)
this lack of education means people cant get good jobs in the future
health consequences of global inequalities regarding money
developing countries have a higher risk of disease
because countries they cant afford healthcare
poor people cant afford to pay for healthcare either
meaning lower life expectancy and infant mortality
and healthy food
environmental problems of global inequality
people cant afford fuel and they get firewood, which = deforestation
factories = local pollution
also, developed countries have factories in developing ones, like pandabuy
finally, they cant afford eco technology so the vehicles used have more emissions
the two theories of development
rostows theory
franks dependency theory
