what is the sensitive period?
a time in the life of an animal when a small amount of experience or total lack of experience will have a large effect on later behavior
neonatal period in dogs
0-14 days
- deaf and blind
- needs to be stimulated to urinate and defecate
- spends most of the time eating or sleeping
- studies show that pups handled during this period grow faster, mature faster, and are more resistant to disease
