Negatives of individual indicators
- Too broad and generalised
- They are averages which disguise and distort internal variations in a country
- Some areas/regions are more wealthy than others
- Subsistence economies are not included in wealth indicators
- Some indicators irrelevant (e.g. computers per household where there is limited electricity)
Composite indicator
Compiled using a number of indicators to provide a broader, more balanced description of the level of development of a country or region.
PQLI
Physical Quality of Life Index
Infant mortality, life expectancy at age one and basic literacy
PQLI advantages
3 indicators- more reliable
Good indication of quality of life
Linked concepts- investment in education and health care reflected in PQLI
PQLI disadvantages
Overlap in infant mortality and life expectancy
Difficult to put numbers to the scale
Ignores economic factors and other ‘quality of life’ areas like justice, security and human rights
HDI
Human Development Index
Adjusted income per capita, education attainment and life expectancy at birth
HDI advantages
Allows direct comparison between countries
Can be adjusted to show figures for male and female incomes
HDI disadvantages
Only 3 sets of data are used
Won’t show internal differences within countries
If all countries improve at her same rate them poorer countries will never climb the rankings
