A coconut is used to incubate a bacteria called BTI. When it is cracked open and spread onto water, the bacteria are eaten by the mosquito larvae and it kills them.
BTI coconut
A pesticide used to kill insects. It is now banned for use in agriculture due to its impact on the environment and health.
DDT
A very strong chemical contained in insect repellent.
DEET
Countries where people have high standards of living.
Developed countries
A country that has little industry and lacks access to healthcare or education.
Developing country
Factors that are used to compare the development of one region against another. Examples of indicators include GDP, number of doctors per 1000 people, adult literacy, and life expectancy.
Development indicator
A country ruled by someone who has complete authority.
Dictatorship
A long period of low rainfall that creates a major shortage of water.
Drought
Aims to raise incomes by expanding and improving economic activities such as farming, manufacturing and tourism.
Economic development
An increase in the ability of an economy to produce more goods and services.
Economic growth
A statistic about the economy that can be used to illustrate a country’s level of development e.g. GNP.
Economic indicator
When a disease is always present in a particular area.
Endemic
A type of tree that absorbs a lot of water.
Eucalyptus tree
A statistical index used to rank the human development of countries, on a scale between 0 and 1. Covers life expectancy, education and standards of living.
Human development index (HDI)
Goods or services which enter a country.
Import
The number of children who die before the age of one.
Infant mortality rate
A fine veil treated with chemicals and draped around a bed to prevent mosquitos biting at night.
Insecticide treated mosquito nets
The average number of years a person is expected to live depending on where they live.
Life expectancy
A potentially fatal disease spread by mosquitos.
Malaria
A chemical used to repel mosquitos.
Malathion
Gross Domestic Product is the total amounts of goods and services produced in a year. ‘Per capita’ means per head. GDP is divided by population.
Per capita GDP
A state in which someone is poor, either relatively or absolutely.
Poverty
Providing people with essential services such as education, training and healthcare.
Social development
The United Nations Children’s Fund. An agency of the United Nations.
UNICEF
The successor of the League of Nations, the UN was established in 1945 as an international organisation designed to keep peace, uphold international law and set standards in human rights.
United Nations
A part of the United Nations that monitors health throughout the world.
