A mental picture that an individual has of themselves.

Self-image is determined in early childhood by quality of social interaction and influence of parents or care givers.
Parents who give child compliments lays the foundation for positive self-image.
Experiences with other people reinforce how we feel about ourselves.

Self-image can become distorted due to puberty.
Unwanted physical characteristics e.g. Acne.
Media portray ideal images - compare themselves to ‘fake’ bodies.
Anorexics have a distorted self-image, they see themselves as fat.
Negative self-image can lead to psychological problems such as negative feeling of self-worth and depression.
How is self-image affected by life events and social roles??
These influence how we define ourselves. Roles such as parent, learner or member of a sport club help others recognise the status of an individual and provide guidance for behaviour.
Roles and events influence personal traits that may affect self-image.
Good job status = good self-image.

Childhood- describe themselves in terms of personal traits.
Adulthood - feel defined by their social status.
Effects of positive self-image:
Enhances physical, social, mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing.
