Development Flashcards
GnRH
Gonadotropin-releasing hormone. Stimulates the release of FSH and LH. Released within the hypothalamus
FSH
Follicle-stimulating hormone. Stimulates growth and maturation of follicles.
Follicle
Houses oocyte and produces estrogen
Estrogen
Normally inhibits LH and FSH but causes LH surge at a certain threshold. Typically produced by the corpus luteum.
LH
luteinizing hormone stimulates the outer cells of the follicle. Turns it into corpus luteum and maintains it.
corpus luteum
Makes estrogen and progesterone. It also maintains endometrium. Basically is mass of cells in the ovaries.
Differences between male and female gametogenesis
1: Spermatogenesis is a continuous process that occurs after puberty till death whereas oogenesis is a discontinuous process that occurs after puberty till menopause.
2: Spermatogenesis results in four motile male gametes (sperms) from a Spermatogonium and oogenesis results into a single non-motile female gamete (ovum) from an Oogonium.
