Development Flashcards
What does development mean?
The acquisition of skills, knowledge, or physical or mental abilities in a set sequence/order.
What are the key principles?
The key principles are:
1) from head to toe.
2) from the inside to the outside.
3) in same sequence. It at different rates.
4) holistically.
Areas of development
S > Social development P > Physical development E > Emotional development C > Cognitive development L > Language development
How is development measured?
To measure development, key workers or health visitors will observe the child to see if the are meeting milestones
Brain development
Triples in weight in first 2 yrs.
Axon - the part of the Neuron through which electricity travels.
Axon terminal - a part of the neutron involved in making a connection with another Neuron.
Debdrite- a part of the neuron involved in making a connection with another neuron.
Myelin - the substance that costs the axon of a neuron.
Myelination - the process by which the myelin coating of an axon is formed.
Neural pathway - an established route for signals within the brain.
Neuron - a brain cell
synapse - the gap between two neuron Electrical impulses pass across this gap from the dendrite of one Neuron to the axon terminal of the other Neuron.
What is atypical development?
Where the patterns and rate of a child’s development falls outside the expected range for the child’s age group.
What is delayed global development?
Where a child’s rate of progress across all areas of development is lower than the expected range for their age group.
What is gifted development!
With the potential to develop cognitive abilities significantly ahead of other children in the same age group.
What is talented development?
Demonstrating higher than average skills in a practical area, such as creative, musical or sporting achievements.
Effects of delayed in development
Delay > Impact
Social > forming relationships. Can’t sustain interest in peer’s play.
Physical > social isolation. Fewer opportunities for interactions.
Emotional > socially and physical as won’t play.
Cognitive > read and write, playing -> Social, low self-esteem.
Language > fewer opportunities to interact and play. Organise and express thoughts.
