Development Flashcards
Prenatal period
is the period from conception to birth
Germinal
- fertilization to 14 days.
- The primitive germ layers form during this time
embryonic period
days 14 to 56 of development.
* The major organ systems form during this period.
* Fertilization to 8 weeks of development
fetal period
- day 56 to birth (the last 30 weeks of development).
- The organ systems grow and become more mature during this time. week 8 to birth
fertilization
- union of sperm cell and oocytes along with chromosomes. Sperm cells do not enter oocyte, only DNA. All our organelles
capacitation
makes sperm capable of releasing enzymes to reach oocyte
zygote
results from fusion of sperm and oocyte (contain 46 chromosomes)
Placenta
structure derived from embryonic and maternal tissues where fetus and mother are connected
Umbilical cord
- connecting stalk between placenta and embryo
- contains blood vessels that carry
blood from embryo to placenta and from placenta to embryo - Embryonic and maternal blood supply are separate, do not mix
- Nutrients and waste products must cross a semipermeable barrier between the two circulations.
Ectoderm (outer layer)
- Epidermis of Skin
- Brain and Spinal Cord
- Lens and cornea of eye
Mesoderm (middle layer)
- Dermis of Skin
- Heart and Blood Vessels
- Muscles and Bones
- Kidneys and Gonads
Endoderm
- Lining of the digestive tract
- Lining of lungs
Neural plate
- 18 days after fertilization
- ectoderm overlying on the dorsal
side
Neural folds
edges of neural plate rise and come together
Neural tube
neural folds meet in midline and
fuse forming a tube
* becomes brain, spinal cord, parts of peripheral nervous system
