Cognitivism
- The approach of tying new information to existing knowledge is a well known approach.
- It is a facet of a learning theory known as cognitivism.
- Cognitivism concerns the operation of the mind.
Assimilation
new information is fit into existing schema. This may be at the cost of altering the information

we change our mental maps to accommodate the new information
focused reading: SQ3R
Survey: What is your text about, who is it by? Check title, ‘topic sentences’ – the first line of each paragraph, headings etc.
Question: What exactly do you want to learn / what level of detail do you need?
Read: Active reading to answer your questions. Make notes.
Recall: Close the text and try and note down what the key points were Think about the questions you had in mind for reading the text
Review: What are the key points? Are your notes clear?
constructivism
Constructivism is concerned with the construction of meaning.
Social constructivism emphasises that meaning making takes place through conversation and interaction. These can be with other students or with the teacher.
situated learning
people learn by participation in a community of practice
