Developing Immunity Flashcards
What is natural active immunity?
When the body produces it’s own antibodies to antigens encountered naturally
What is natural passive immunity?
When antibodies made by the mother are passed on to the child in breast milk or the placenta
What is immunisation?
The process of protecting people from infection by giving them a passive or artifical form of immunity
What is vaccination?
The introduction of harmless forms of organisms or antigens to produce artifical immunity
What is artifical passive immunity?
When antibodies are extracted from one person and injected into another
What is artifical active immunity?
When the body produces it’s own antibodies to fight against an antigen aquired through vaccination
What are attenuated proteins?
Pathogens that have been modifyed so they don’t cause disease but still cause the immune response
What is heard immunity?
When a high proportion of a herd are immune which lowers the risk of infection to those not immune
What are the advantages of vaccination?
People are protected from fatal illness
Society benifits because of heard immunity
Less cost in treating illness later on
What are the disadvantages of vaccination?
Some children are allergic to the vaccination
Some become extremely ill after vaccination
