Dev of the Eye Flashcards
What are the germ cell layer origins of the eye? (2)
Ectoderm and mesenchyme.
What does the ectoderm derived from the neural tube give rise to? (3)
Retina, nerve fibres of the optic disc, smooth muscle of the iris
What does the surface ectoderm on the side of the head form? (3)
Corneal and conjunctival epithelium, lens, lacrimal and tarsal glands
What does the mesenchyme form? (7)
Corneal stroma, sclera, choroid, iris, ciliary musculature, part of the vitreous body, cells lining the anterior chamber.
Corneal stroma, sclera, choroid, iris, ciliary musculature, part of the vitreous body, cells lining the anterior chamber.
Neural crest.
The lens is induced to develop by the presence of what?
Optic vesicle.
The presence of the developing lens is important for what reasons?
(1) Induces the formation of the cornea, (2) Stimulates the development of the vitreous body, (3) Normal growth of the pigment layer of the retina (which in turn influences differentiation of the mesenchyme into the choroid and sclera).
