Determinism and Free Will Flashcards
Determinism and free will view
Determinism- All human behaviour and thoughts are determined by factors outside our control
Free will- view that free will governs our behaviour where individuals are free to actively chose how they behave
Deterministic studies
Environmental- Watson and raynor and milgram, skinner
Biological- Bruner
Free will studies
Cognitive- yochelson and samenow cos errors shown by everyone not just criminals, criminals chose to commit crime as a result of free will
Social- milgram not al ps went to 450 volts had free will to not carry on
Biology- raine not everyone with abnormalities commits crime
Determinism strengths and weaknesses
- scientific viewpoint
Milgram standardised - Useful
Behaviour is predicted and controlled Watson and raynor CC associate stimuli with responses - Does not allow free will
Skinner hard determinist in OP argue free will is illusion but people like to believe they have free will. - Reductionist
Bruner aggression only determined by genes
Free will strengths and weaknesses
- Evidence to support it
Milgram didn’t all go to 450 practical applications - Encourages control over life and responsibility
Raine NGRI responsible for crimes - Ignores predispositions
Brunner biology - Can’t test scientifically
