determining type of hearing loss Flashcards
how do we determine HL?
examining the relationship between bone and air conduction thresholds
air thresholds are outside of normal range but bone thresholds are completely within normal limits. loss is….
conductive (outer or middle ear)
conductive hearing loss causes
decrease in loudness, doesn’t affect understanding
-should not exceed 60 dB, this suggest neural involvement
air bone gap
bone should always be better but if gap between air and bone thresholds is greater than 15 dB THIS IS ABNORMAL
if there is an AB gap,
look at tymps to confirm this finding
AB gaps are only found when there is..
conductive or mixed HL
sensorineural HL
- characterized by loss of clarity of speech
- HL for air and bone
- no medical interventions, unless tumor growth
- can use amplification
conductive HL configuration is typically
flat
mixed HL
-causes hearing loss for both air and bone with a gap
mixed HL SOL
outer and/or middle AND inner
conductive portion of HL may be treated for SN will remain
ex) impacted cerumen and presbycusis
if SRT is different than pure tone?
audiogram is inaccurate
