ROLES OF CUSTODY OFFICER
Under Codes of Practice C, the custody officer has many roles
•need to listen to the reason of arrest, and record all details from the detention
•arrange a suitable adult to the suspect if they are under the age of 18
•arrange a person of the suspect’s choosing to be informed of the arrest CAN be delayed if the suspect committed an indictable offence
•arrange access to a solicitor for the suspect but can be delayed if again they committed an indictable offence
•ensure the person understands why they are being arrested.
TIME LIMITS IN DETENTION
•custody officer is allowed to detain the suspect for a maximum of 24 hours at the police station
•however this could be extended for up to 96 hours if the crime is serious and if the police get a warrant from the magistrates court.
