Detecting sound Flashcards
What is a pinna
Outer part of your ear that directs the soundwave into your auditory canal towards your ear drum.
How do you hear
Your ear detects soundwaves (your ear is your body’s microphone)
What makes up the outer ear
The pinna, auditory canal and ear drum
What are ossicles
They make up your middle ear, tiny bones that amplify sound ( makes the sound louder)
What is a cochlea
Snail shaped tube in your inner ear. They help you to hear and contain thousands of tiny hairs.
What is a auditory nerve
An electrical signal that travels to the brain, helps you to hear.
Inner ear meaning
The cochlea and semi-circular canals (help you balance) make up your inner ear.
Decibels
Measure sound intensity (loudness)
How can you damage your hearing
A build up of ear wax or very loud sounds or hear injuries.
Reducing damaging your ear
Wear ear defenders, reduce the build up of ear wax and do not poke things up your ear
How does a microphone work
Soundwaves hit a flexible plate called a diaphragm this vibrates like your ear drum and produces a signal.
You can use an amplifier to make the sound louder, loud speakers convert the electrical signal back into sound and they vibrate
