The arts and crafts style
Simplicity - removing clutter, suitability sized furniture.
Splendour - different materials and new techniques: unusual material an precious metal.
Nature - plants, bird and animal forms. Stylised flower pattern. Heart symbolising friendship and the sailing ship representing the journey of life.
Colour and texture - link between colour and nature. Natural materials: stone, wood, wool and linen.
Philosophy of Arts an Crafts (1850-1900)
Grew out of a concern for the effects of industrialisation upon design, traditional craftsmanship and the lives of ordinary working class people. The design of mass produced products such as furniture was often overlooked. Therefore poor quality, over decorated and often oversized imitations of traditional items of furniture were being produced. John Ruskin and William Morris.

Art nouveau philosophy
Or ‘New art’ was an international style of decoration and architecture. The principle of art nouveau was the concept of a unity and harmony across the various fine arts and crafts media and the formulation of new aesthetic values.

Nature - natural forms and whiplash lines and stylised flowers, leaves, roots, buds and see pods. And peacock feathers
The female form - long flowing hair
Other cultures - Japanese wood cuts, asymmetrical outlines and the minimal grid structure of Japanese interiors provided vertical lines and height. Also Celtic Arabian and Ancient Greek patterns
