Design Flashcards
What are built environments?
Areas people build for a purpose, changing the natural environment.
What is ecological balance?
Occurs when people, plants, animals, microbes, the elements and the atmosphere interact harmoniously.
What consequences should be considered whilst developing a technology?
Impact on the environment or ecosystem Costs to the community Availability of resources Use of renewable energy Opportunity to recycle
What is the life cycle of tomato sauce?
Cultivate tomatoes
Manufacture the sauce
Product distribution, retail and consumption
Recycling
What is sustainability?
Meeting the needs of the present without making it difficult for future generations to meet their needs, ensuring that the resources we use can be replenished.
What is conserving?
Keeping safe, in particular preserving for the future.
What are 5 main renewable energies?
Oil/Gas, Wind, Water, Sun, Waves
What’s a resource?
Something we use to achieve our goals; can be human or non-human
What does photovoltaic mean?
Materials that convert sunlight directly into electricity.
What is the Greenhouse Effect?
Also known as global warming; occurs when the gases in the Earth’s atmosphere insulate it, preventing the sun’s heat from escaping into space.
What is the ozone layer?
The layer of gases above the Earth’s surface that forms a protective shield, preventing radiation from the sun.
What does renewable mean?
Able to be renewed; resources are replaced within a time span that is relevant to humans.
What are some of the issues that remind us that we must care for our environment?
The greenhouse effect The depletion of the ozone layer Species under threat of extinction Air and water pollution Waste disposal
What is hydro-electricity?
Electricity produced using the energy created by the flow of water.
What is salinity?
The underground salt level rises, making the soil too salty for cultivation.
What does ecological refer to?
The relationship between living things and their environment.
What is innovation?
A product or system that satisfies a new need or an existing one in a different way.
What are emerging technologies?
The new materials, tools and techniques that are the foundation of new designs.
What is nanotechnology?
The science that creates miniature machines out of molecules to store data or process instructions. A nanometer is one billionth of a metre.
What are control technologies?
Management of the operation of another system, so that it is programmed to act in a predetermined way
What is mechanisation?
The use of machinery in the productive process.
What are natural resources?
Naturally occurring sources of wealth such as land, water, minerals, petroleum, and vegetation.
