design Flashcards
What is Elements?
The features and fundamental aspects that are involved in making a design.
What is Line?
Defines position, direction, point in motion, shape, mood, perspective.
e.g. vertical, horizontal, diagonal, curved, thick, thin, bold, faint.
What is Shape?
2D, external form or outline of an image, produced by line, value, colour, texture. Creates mood, focal point.
e.g. organic, geometric, realistic.
What is 3D Form?
Shape with depth, determined by shading, lighting, colour, texture.
What is Space?
Positive (filled space) or negative (empty space).
What is Texture?
Surface quality of an object. Tactile sense.
e.g. rough, silky, pebbly, smooth.
What is Colour?
How colours work together to create a visually pleasing design.
e.g. hue, tint, tone, shade, saturation, value, monochromatic, analogous, complementary.
What are Principles?
The laws applied to the elements, for the best design results.
What is Balance?
Distribution of visual weight. Importance, harmony.
e.g. asymmetrical, symmetrical, radial.
What is Emphasis?
Special attention given to one part or element.
e.g. shape, colour, size.
What is Dominance?
Focal point, attract eye.
e.g. size, colour, shape.
What is Unity?
Relationship between elements that helps them work together. Organisation of content.
e.g. pattern, shapes, colour scheme, alignment.
What is Pattern?
Repetition of elements, gives unity.
e.g. typeface, colour, shape, layout.
What is Movement?
Occurs when an object seems to be moving, use of line, form, curves, shape.
How do elements and principles work together?
Elements are the what (what you use); Principles are the how (how you use them).
what is typography?
the art of arranging text in a way that makes it legible, clear, and visually appealing to the reader
typeface and font definition?
Typeface: a family or design of characters that share a common aesthetic
(e.g. arial, new times roman)
Font: a specific variation of a typeface
o (bold, italics, regular)
what is readability and legibility?
- ## Readability: refers to how easy it is to read and comprehend words within a passage or composition
- Legibility: refers to the length of time it takes a person to read a letter within a word sentence or passage of writing
what is typespacing (kerning, tracking, leading)?
o Kerning – space between individual letters
o Tracking – spacing across a word
o Leading – vertical space between lines
logival v hierarchal organisation of content?
- Logical: presents information in a sequence that makes sense based on natural flow of ideas
- Hierarchical: level of importance
a well design should include…learnability…
(and definitions)
- learnability (how easy it is to complete basic tasks)
- efficiency (how quickly it is to complete tasks)
- memorability (how easy it is for a user to establish proficiency)
- errors (how forgiving is a product, if a user makes mistakes)
- satisfaction (how aesthetically pleasing is it to use)
GUI definition
graphical/visual operating system that uses icons, menus and windows
what you see
usability, inclusivity, accessability definitions
- usability: people will be able to use the website more effectively
- inclusivity: design is inclusive of various different users
- accessibility: design inclusive of features accommodating different disabilities.
user interface includes?
- input controls
- navigation controls
- information comonents
GUI design considerations?
list them and their definition(theres 9)
- know your audience
- pay attention to patterns
- stay consistent
- use visual hierarchy
- provide feedback
- be forgiving
- empowering your user
- speak their language
- currency
features of a user interface?
what specific design choices were made for the target audience
accessability principles and their examples?
- percievable (text alternatives, captions, adaptable presentation)
- operable (keyboard access, sufficient time, no triggers)
- understandable (readable, predictable)
- robust (user agents, future tech)
suitability of GUI for audience needs?
UI and UX are suitable for audience in terms of their characteristics
website accessability features?
- captions
- descriptive links
- colour carefully
- text alternatives
- accessible forms
- font size control
- narrator
inclusivity features?
- language selector
- cultural representaion
- font size control
- responsive design
- gender neautral language
