Deserts Flashcards
Where are hot deserts found
Between 15° and 30° north and south of the equator, mainly on the west side of continents, where the prevailing wind covers over dryland
Describe and explain the climate of the hot deserts
It is very hot in summer but who were in the winter and there is very little rain. Rainfall is unpredictable, but there is small amounts of rain.
How do plants adapt to desert conditions?
Some plants have shallow, widespread roots to absorb a maximum of rainfall moisture. Others have deep taproots to get water that is deep underground.
Explain how a cactus has adapted to survive in the desert
Leaves are reduced to spines to reduce water loss through transpiration. Wide and deep roots absorb rainwater on the surface and reach the underground deep water. Sunken stomata to reduce water loss. Fleshy and thick stems to store water and perform photosynthesis
Where are deserts located?
the tropics around the Equator, the Tropics of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn.
