Desertification Flashcards
Definition
Is the loss of previously productive land in specific dry land regions of the world
- refers to the transformation of once habitable land into desert if either change of climate or human activity.
How this process leads to changing of land cover
It is creating land degradation, creating arid and semi arid land cover
Causes of desertification
Over grazing Deforestation Loss of vegetation Droughts Low humidity Ross growth of population Poverty Over cultivation
Impacts
Economic
Impacts upon agriculture, not allowing farmers to make business
Increases poverty
Social impacts
Disease, well being
- poor diets
Related illness
Salt and dusty air increase infant mortality rate
Response
UNCCD
UNCCD (Unified convention of combating desertification)
Formed in 1994
- aim of initiating action and boosting individual countries and regions to establish their own action plans
- the action plans should detail processes for preventing dry land degradation and reducing the effects of drought, so that poverty reduction and environmental sustainability is supported
3 targets
- 0 net land degradation by 2030
- 0 net forest degradation by 2030
- Drought policies implemented in all drought vulnerable regions by 2030
UNCCD effect
194 countries have signed the agreement
- world desertification day 17 June
- between 1991 and 2011, degraded land increases from15% to 25% of all land globally
