Q

explain deforestation

A

the removal of trees from a large area.
the roots help to bind the soil together.
results in a reduction of evapotranspiration, infiltration and percolation.
leaving the soils unsaturated which makes the soils more susceptible to wind erosion.
soils will be dry , little nutrients and infertile.

Q

explain overgrazing

A

when cattle are kept on land grazing for long periods of time.
causing damage to the vegetation due to no time to restore.
soil then exposed to soil erosion.
increased global supply and demand for farmed meat, worsening this issue.

Q

explain irrigation

A

is the supply of water to crops or land, typically using channels.
poorly managed irrigation schemes result in salinisation of the soil- a salty crust on the surface. leaves toxic salts behind.
creating impermeable and infertile soil.
most vegetation will not grow in these conditions and therefore leaves the soil susceptible to desertification.
