Causes and locations of hot deserts Flashcards
4 causes of hot deserts
- location-between the Hadley and Ferrell cell, 10-30 degrees north and south of the equator.
- cold ocean currents.
- rain shadow effect
4.continentiality
Explain Hadley and Ferrel impact
high pressured, anticyclonic zones, cold dry sinking air.
EG. THAR DESERT
Explain cold ocean currents impact
western coasts. upwelling of cold air due to the circulation of wind currents. the cold water on the surface decreases the temperature of the overlying air mass. this air mass blows over the land , resulting in drier conditions due to the fact that it can not hold a great amount of water.
EG. SAHARA, CANNARIES CURRENT
explain rain shadow effect impact
prevailing winds cause water vapour to rise and condense on the windward side of the mountain. this windward sides receives more rainfall and therefore is less arid. On the leeward side, a rain shadow forms which is a lack of rain and therefore has a more arid climate.
EG. ANDES , ATACAMA
explain continentality impact
an air mass moving over a continent will loose moisture due to rainfall but will not pick up any moisture due to low evaporation rates. leaving areas at the centre of a continent with little rainfall and aridity.
