Desertification Flashcards
Desertification
the process of land turning into desert. usually occurs on the edges of an existing desert.
Overgrazing
where areas are stripped of vegetation by grazing animals exposed to the soil. this then gets eroded by wind or water
Over cultivation
the soil can become exhausted (stripped of nutrients). It will turn to dust and become unfertile
Population growth
lead to increasing demand for fuel and wood. The trees are stripped of their branches and eventually die. with the trees go the moisture
Climate change
unreliable rains
what are the consequences of desertification?
Loss of biodiversity
famine
food insecurity
loss of livestock
Is desertification inevitable?
NO, there are solutions
Water and soil management
Ponding banks - areas of land enclosed to store water
Contour Traps - embankments built along the contours of slopes to prevent soil being washed away
