Descriptive Stats Flashcards
Categorical
category assigned to each data point (eg. male/ female)
Discrete/ Ordinal
Data points are placed in logical order, with set intervals (eg. 1st 2nd 3rd)
Continuous (scale)
data points are ranked on a logical scale (relative difference between scores have meaning) eg. temp, weight, reaction times
Measures of central tendency?
define use
name 3
best guess about the typical value in sample
mean
median
mode
Measures of Dispersion
best guess about typical spread of data in the sample
range
variance - sum of squared deviance (divided by)
total sample size
standard dev.
limitation of using variance and solution?
the unit is the square of the measurement unit (eg.IQ^2)
solutions = square root variance to convert back to normal score
Reporting Descriptive stats:
State what your’re finding (sample size), state mean (SD, range)
