Correlation Flashcards
Correlation?
investigating the relationship between 2 continuous variables
(correlation doesn’t mean causation)
scatter plots
each dot = 1 person
each person has a score on the x and y axis
correlation seen through pattern created
Direction of correlation?
positive =when one variable increases so does the other
negative= when one increases other decreases
Assumption of linearity
for non-linear relationships= correlation if not suitable for this data
weak vs strong
strong correlation = closer to straight line 0= weak 1= strong (0.01-0.29 =weak 0.30 - 0.69 =moderate 0.70-0.99) = strong (-1 =strong negative)
Degrees of freedom?
n-2
Shared variance?
proportion of variance shared between 2 variables (rxr) = %
R^2
The percentage shows the difference in scores we find between one variable is dependent on the other variable
so, the rest of the % = other variables
Stronger correlation = higher shared variance
= more important the relationship is
