Descriptive Statistics Flashcards
What are Measures of Central Tendency?
Ways of seeing an overall trend in a quantitative set of data
What are the types of Measures of Central Tendency?
- Mean
- Median
- Mode
What is the mean and how is it calculated?
The average of the data
Add up of all numbers in the data set, divided by how many numbers there are in the data set.
e.g. the mean of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 would be calculated:
[1+2+3+4+5+6] / 6 = 3.5
What is the median?
the middle score when the data are in numerical order.
e.g. the median of numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 would be 3),
What is the mode?
the most frequently occurring number in a data set.
e.g. the mode of 1, 2, 3, 4, 4, 5 is 4
What is Measures of Dispersion?
It describes the spread of data around a central value
shows how valve the data is
What are the types of Measures of Dispersion?
- range
- Standard deviation
What is the range?
The difference between the highest and lowest score.
What is standard deviation?
Measures how concentrated the data are around the mean.
What are positive and negative correlations and zero?
- A positive correlation occurs when both variables increase in number.
- Negative occurs when one variable increases and the other decreases.
- No correlation is when neither variable increases or decreases with the other
