Description/Structure of organelles Flashcards
Nucleus
Surrounded by double membrane (nuclear envelope) with nuclear pores. Contains nucleolus
Plasma Membrane
Phospholipid bilayer that contains cholesterol and proteins
Nucleolus
Round body inside nucleus- not surrounded by a membrane
R.E.R
Connected flattened disks studded with ribosomes. Held together by cytoskeleton
Golgi Apparatus
Complex membrane system of membrane bound stacked pouches in cytoplasm
Lysosomes
Membrane bound organelle containing digestive enzymes
S.E.R
Connected flattened membrane disks found in cytoplasm
Ribosomes
Found within cytoplasm or attached to R.E.R. Made up of rRNAs and ribosomal protein molecules
Mitochondria
Rod shaped structures with folded inner membranes found in cytoplasm. Contains own ribosomes and DNA.
Chloroplast
Contain stacks (grana) of thylakoids (membranes) which contain photosynthetic pigments.
Permanent Vacuole
Surrounded by a membrane known an tonoplast
Centrioles
Pair of organelles composed mainly of a protein called tubulin.
Absent from higher plants
Found in 9:2 arrangement in animal cells
Cytoplasm
Highly viscous
Composed of about 85% water, proteins, salts, and other substances
Vacuole
Larger from of a vesicle
Enclosed compartments
Shape and size vary depending on cell’s requirements
Cell Wall
Plants: cellulose (polysaccharide)
Prokaryotes: peptidoglycan- or murein?
