Cytoskeleton Flashcards
Functions of cytoskeleton
- Maintains shape and internal organisation
- Provides mechanical support for essential functions like transport, division, and movement
Three main fibres in cytoskeleton
Microtubules, microfilaments, and intermediate filaments
Largest fibre in cytoskeleton
Microtubules
What protein makes microtubules?
Tubulin
What shape in provided by tubulin in microtubules? What properties does this provide/roles in cell?
Hollow tube
- Supports cell shape and prevents collapse
Role of microtubules other than structure?
Transport
e.g Motor proteins move along microtubules transporting vesicles etc
What things do microtubules form?
cilia, flagella, spindle fibres that separate chromosomes in cell division
What protein do microfilaments mainly consist of?
Actin - two intertwined actin polymers
Example of microfilaments helping cells move
Push filaments to extend to a foot- white blood cell
Microfilament roles
Maintain shape
Change cell shape/movement
How can microfilaments aid photosynthesis?
Move chloroplasts for optium photosynthesis
Role of microfilaments in cell division (animal cell)
Form ring to pinch cell in cytokinesis
Role of intermediate filaments
Provide stability
Anchors for organelles that don’t need to move
What are the intermediate fibres in the nucleus called?
Nuclear lamina
