description of matter Flashcards
What is matter ?
anything with mass and occupies space
How can matter be classiflied as ?
- pure substance
- mixture
What are pure substances ?
a. all pure substances are homogenous
b. pure substances are either elements or compounds
What are Elements?
- can not be broken down
- the name of an element represented by a chemical symbol
what does elements consist of?
one identical atom
What is a compound?
consist of two or more diffeent elements chemically combined ( bonded )
Describe a compound
- can be broken down
- unite in definite proportions
- different properties than elements
What is a mixture?
formed when 2 or more substances physically combined
What are the two types of mixtures?
- homogenous mixture
- heterogenous mixtues
element and compound - substance
What is a homogenous mixture?
the composition is uniform ( same ) throughout the mixture
what is another name for homogenous mixtures?
solutions
what is a heterogenous mixture?
composition is not uniform (different) throughout the mixture
How can mixtures be separated by?
physical means such as distilliation filtration
what are the 3 ways mixtures are form?
- mixture of 2 elements
- mixture of element and compound
- mixtue of 2 compounds
How are the properties of matter classifed as?
- physical property
- chemical property
what are physical properties?
propeties that can be determined without altering the chemical makeup of the material
ex. color, size, mass, volume, density, melting pts, freezing pts, solubility
what are chemical properties?
can only be identified by trying to cause a chemical change in which a substance may have changed into a new substance
ex. chemical property of iron is that it will react with oxygen to form iron oxide( rust) however gold has a different chemical property it will react with oxygen
Changes in matter are classifed by?
- physical change
- chemical change
use of energy
what is an aqueous solution?
- substance dissolves in water
- homogenous solution
- mixture is a physical combination of 2 or more substance
Properties of solid
definite shape, definite volume, orderly geometric pattern, strong force of attraction
what are the properties of liquid
- indefinite shape
- definite volume
- less orderly arangement of particles
- moderate force of attraction
What is the gas properties?
- indefinite shape
- indefinite volume
- randomly arranged
- weak force of attraction
Difference between a gas and vapor
a vapor is the gaseous state of a substance that is generally a liquid o solid at room temp
