Flexion
Decreasing the angle between a joint
Extension
Increases the angle between a joint
Adduction
Moving towards midline
Abduction
Moving away from midline
Medial (internal) Rotation
Rotation towards the midline (eg. rotating your leg so your toes face in)
Lateral (external) Rotation
Rotation away from the midline (eg. rotating your leg so your toes face out)
Circumduction
Combination of flexion/extension and adduction/abduction (circular motion, only at shoulders and hips)
Pronation
Medial rotation of forearm (eg. thumbs down)
Supination
Lateral rotation of forearm (eg. cupping hands)
Inversion
Rolling ankle out, sole faces in
Eversion
Rolling ankle in, sole faces out
Plantar Flexion
Pointed toe
Dorsi Flexion
Flex toe (toe up)
Elevation
Shoulders move superiorly (eg. shoulders up)
Depression
Shoulders move inferiorly (eg. shoulders down)
