Describing lesions Flashcards
What is a comedone
Plug in a sebaceous follicle containing sebum, bacteria and debris
Can be open (blackheads) or closed (whiteheads)
Words to describe the lesions distribution (5)
Generalised/localised Flexural/extensor Pressure areas I.e sacrum, ankle, heel Dermatomal Photosensitive (exposed areas I.e face, neck, back of hands)
What is a Koebner rash
Linear rash at site of trauma
Words to describe configuration/pattern of grouped lesions (6)
Discrete - individual separate lesions Confluent - lesions merge Linear Target - concentric rings e.g erythema multiforme Annular - circle e.g tinea corporis Discoid - coin sized
Words to describe colour of a lesion (5)
Erythema - red discolouration that blanches on pressure
Purpura - purple discolouration that does not blanch on pressure
Hypopigmentation
Depigmentation
Hyperpigmentation
Words to describe morphology of a primary lesion (9)
Macule - flat area of altered colour e.g freckle

Pustule - pus containing lesion <0.5cm e.g acne
Abscess - localised pus containing lesion
What is a boil
Staph infection around/within hair follicle
What is a carbuncle
Staph infection of adjacent hair follicles I.e multiple boils
Words to describe morphology of secondary lesions (8)

What is onycholysis
Separation of distal end of nail plate from nail bed so appears white
Causes of onycholysis
Trauma
Psoriasis
Fungal nail infection
Types of purpura
Petechia - pinpoint macules
Ecchymoses - large patches e.g raccoon eyes
