What is puberty?

Where the internal reproductive organs reach maturity.

What part of the brain releases a certain hormone? What is that hormone?
A
Hypothalamus.
Releases luteinising hormone releasing hormone ( LHRH)

What does LHRH do?
A
Acts on the anterior pituitary gland, causing the release of follicle stimulation hormone (FSH) and luteinising hormone (LH)

What do FSH and LH do?
A
Cause ovaries to secrete oestrogens.
Oestrogen is responsible for secondary sex characteristics

What are the 6 secondary sex characteristics in females?
A
- Maturation of the uterus, uterine tubes and ovaries
- Development and enlargement of breasts
- Growth of pubic and axillary hair
- Increase in height
- Widening of the pelvis
- Increased fat deposition in the subcutaneous tissue around hips and breasts
