- Priestly creates tension through the Inspector by ignoring social conventions. Despite being of lower class he has all the power on stage. He isn’t intimidated by Mr/Mrs Birling or Gerald
- doesn’t mind upsetting/challenging characters + causes arguments/tension in the family
- He expresses little emotion “Cooly, looking hard at him” and “creates at once an impression of massiveness” showing he isn’t intimidated by the family class

Catalyst
Like Priestly; Inspector Goole controls the actions. He is the catalyst but he also ensures each character speaks in turn so the order of events which contributed to Eva’s demise is made clear. Only with his permission is the characters allowed to speak, to leave, or view the photograph of the girl in his pocket.
