Descending decks Flashcards
Are fibres in the lateral corticospinal tracts decussated or not?
Decussated
What do the lateral corticospinal tracts innervate
distal voluntary muscle
What do the anterior corticospinal tracts innervate
proximal/ axial voluntary muscles
Are fibres in the anterior corticospinal tracts decussated or not?
not until spinal cord level
Name the extrapyramidal tracts
tectospinal
rubrospinal
reticulospinal
vestibulospinal
Where does the vestibulospinal tract start
vestibular nucelus in the pons
What does the vestibulospinal tract do
controls balance and posture by innervating anti-gravity muscles
What do the medial/ lateral vestibulospinal tracts innervate
medial = head
lateral = controls extensor muscle tone below head
Where does the reticulospinal tract originate?
The reticular formation in the medulla and pons
What is the function of the pontine (medial) reticulospinal tract?
Facilitates voluntary/reflex responses and increases tone
What is the function of the medullary (lateral) reticulospinal tract?
Inhibits voluntary/reflex responses and decreases tone
Where does the rubrospinal tract originate
Red nucelus in the mid brain
What does the rubrospinal tract do
excites flexor muscles and inhibits extensor muslces of the upper body
Where does the tecto-spinal tract orginiate
superior colliculus in the mid brain
