Dermatopathology Flashcards
What is the difference between primary and secondary skin lesions?
Primary lesions develop as a direct result of the disease process
Secondary lesions develop as a consequence of the primary lesion or from the animals actions
What is the difference between a papule and a nodule?
a papule is <1cm and a nodule is >1cm
What is a wheal?
a discrete area of oedema
What size of biopsy punch would you use on the foot pad or nasal planum?
4mm
What is a perivascular histopathological pattern?
Inflammatory cells around dermal blood vessels. Very Common.
What is an Interstitial histopathological pattern?
Spreading out of inflammatory cells from the original perivascular pattern
What is an interface histopathological pattern?
dermo-epidermal junction is obscured by an accumulation of inflammatory cells (lymphocytes)
and/or hydropic degeneration of basal keratinocytes
can indicate autoimmune disease
Describe folliculitis
Inflammation of the hair follicle with various parts of the hair follicle involved
Describe furunculosis
Inflammatory destruction of the hair follicle with rupture and extrusion of the follicle contents
Generally results in a foreign body response in the dermis
Most commonly seen in biopsies of dogs with deep pyoderma
What is a nodular histopathological pattern
Inflammatory cells in dense clusters
Occurs with granulomatous/pyogranulomatous dermatitis
